3 COURSE OF LIGHT

The moment of choice – movement begins. A paper boat is a simple and universally recognizable object that brings together childhood memories, imagination, fragility and courage to venture into the unknown. Enlarged to human scale, this familiar little object turns into immersive space where visitors can enter physically. The image of boat acquires direct connection to the Daugava River. The river becomes a symbolic route, while the illuminated boat represents person’s decision to take this journey. It does not tell about a destination already known, but of the readiness to start movement.

The illuminated four meters long, two meters wide and three meters high paper boat shaped object symbolizes the moment when doubt gives way to choice, movement begins and the course is set. By entering the boat, visitors become participants rather than observers. Taking a photograph is more than just a fun activity: each person’s presence on the boat completes the composition and gives the image a personal story. The artwork is accompanied by specially created soundscapes featuring the rustle of wind, ship’s horn, seagulls calling and splashing water.

This is one of four artworks in the Mūkusala Promenade route of light exhibition “Course of Light. From Doubt to Presence.” The exhibition is conceived as a journey experienced both spatially and emotionally. Together the works create a personal path for visitors moving from unpredictable, shifting light to an encounter with their own reflection in the final installation.
