STARO ORFEJS

Location: Skolas iela 15

“Beaming Orpheus” is a light installation exhibition by young stage designers, the origins of which can be found in the creative workshop led by Klaus Gruenberg which took place early in the spring. At that time the young artists walked around Rīga, listening to the score of Claudio Monteverdi’s baroque opera “Orpheus” on their headphones and searching for a space in the city for the scenes, in which Orpheus enchants the guards of the Underworld with his music and crosses the border between this world and the other world to save his Eurydice. Over the summer, the ideas have developed, matured, lit up and are now ready for the “Staro Rīga” Festival. In an abandoned building – in the border territory between two worlds – each artist presents a light installation, the foundation of which is Monteverdi’s music and the story of Orpheus. We hope that the exhibition will allow the viewer to escape from reality for a moment and together with Orpheus head off on his mystical journey.

The authors of the exhibition are 11 young stage designers, the majority of whom have now confidently begun working in professional theatre. The idea author of the exhibition and artistic consultant is world famous stage designer and lighting artist Klaus Gruenberg from Hamburg, who regularly cooperates with outstanding director and composer Heiner Goebbels, opera director Tatjana Gurbaca and others. One of the most impressive of the artist’s works is the mechanical sound exhibition without actors, Stifters Dinge, created with Goebbels.
