SIENA TIRGUS
Location: Maskavas Street 121b
On the 25th April 2009, the Latgale Suburb Executive Board (now Rīga’s Eastern Executive Board) unveiled sculptor Andris Vārpa’s sculpture in the historic Hay Market in Mazā kalna Street Square which was dedicated to the early days of the horse trams in Rīga. The reconstructed Market square was opened many years before – on the 20th December 2006, and over the years has been transformed into a beautiful square, where the historic market roof and lanterns have been preserved, a children’s play area and footpaths have been established, and benches to rest on have been installed.
The restored market roof, historic lanterns and the traditional Christmas tree reminds us of the life of the people of Rīga and the old market traditions in the Maskava suburb.
