GLASS MOUNTAIN

Facade of the National Library of Latvia

The large-scale illumination project of the National Library of Latvia offers an opportunity to view this building of great significance to our nation in a new light, connecting the architectural language of the Library – the Castle of Light, designed by Gunārs Birkerts, with writing and the word — the cornerstone of language. From the perspective of light art, it is a play of colours and a tribute to light — a belief in the dawn of knowledge, national consciousness, and statehood.

The illuminated image of the Castle of Light symbolizes the poet Rainis’ “glass mountain,” which, in affirming national identity and determination, everyone must climb in order to move forward and achieve their goals. Meanwhile, the highlighting of individual elements and edges in the laser projection — through light and motion — reveals the significance of every smallest detail or graphic element, as well as of the national symbol, the Latvian flag, on Latvia’s birthday.
