31.7 STEP OUT OF TIME

The light installation “Step Out of Time” consists of illuminated stairs and a mirror, with a concave mirror positioned at the top. The stairs symbolize arrival, while the mirror offers the possibility to see oneself in another time. As viewers approach, they see their reflection merging with the surroundings through the interplay of light and the texture of the trees. The installation offers a single, brief and personal moment in which viewers encounter their past, imagination and the flow of time. It is a moment when time seems to stand still and reality becomes transparent.

This is a light artwork in the Art Academy of Latvia student programme. The exhibition of works by students of the Latvian Academy of Arts forms part of the artistic narrative of Kronvalda Park route of light “Awaken!”. The works encourage visitors to pause, notice their surroundings and become aware of their own presence. Breath, conversation, an impulse of light, the flow of people and the temporary transformation of a familiar place create a transition from an individual moment to a shared experience.
