GAISMAS ĶERMEŅI

Location: Vērmanes Garden

This light installation expresses reflections about the relationship between spirit and matter. Reminiscent of human bodies, these light objects placed in the park express a concept about literature and the reading of books – in any place, at any time of day or year, without restrictions – one can read Marcus Aurelius, Ziedonis or Faulkner.

In displaying this object that portrays us, its creators have several aesthetic considerations in mind: “First, we have gained happiness from gazing at the gracefulness, contours and bends of the figures that look like human bodies in contrast to the body movements of real, live passers-by.
Secondly, the lit figures placed in the park that remind us of human bodies helped us to express a thought about literature – in many Riga locations, including Vērmanes Garden, it’s possible to read books or something else and at this time of year, the light objects can do so in our place, because it is obviously easier for them. As it gets dark early, they light up and there’s no need to hold a lantern to see the book’s pages. Plus, instead of biological bodies, the objects are made of special materials which ensure that they’re not cold, and so they can read without constraints.
Thirdly we can get lost in thought with regard to the various poses struck by the light objects, the bodily positions in which we sometimes freeze – when we are busy reading, in moments of intense intellectual action – and these reflections about the relationship of spirit and matter, in our minds, naturally coincide with the light objects. And so they become, by all means, intelligent and alive” say the object creators.
