SPĪĶERU GAISMAS MEŽS

Location: The Spīķeri warehouses near the Spīķeri Concert Hall

At night a forest has entered the Spīķeri warehouses. Dark and enigmatic. This is the place where it’s possible to escape from everyday life, from bright lights, and surrender to the sounds of nature. But mysterious creatures have inhabited it. They’ve transformed from the various utilitarian things used daily, the ones to which we rarely pay attention. They now create light for themselves in the thick of the night and attentively observe us.

The inhabitants of dense forests and deep seas, where light does not penetrate, create light around themselves, thereby enticing their prey or simply communicating with one another. This live light is called bioluminescence.

This installation was created from recycled materials – things that quickly multiply around us every day and rarely do we even know what becomes of them after we’ve left them in the dump. Using the unique properties of these materials, with a simple method they’ve been transformed into sculptures of organic shapes, thereby attempting to give life to a world that we don’t notice on a daily basis and perhaps exists solely in our fantasies. Even the light that shines from these objects is actually only an apparition, an optical illusion. Nonetheless, perhaps we are able to perceive it and even believe in it?

The installation will transport spectators to a special musical world, created by composer Santa Ratniece. Recordings by the Latvian Radio Choir will feature various sounds of nature and sonorous elements of ancient cultures.
