On the border between the active centre of Rīga and quiet Pārdaugava, hidden between the posh Islande Hotel and the noisy Olimpia shopping centre stands a majestic building, previously called the RTU “kojas” [student dormitory] now – the Student Hostel. 10 storeys, 246 flats and about 500 residents… Together with Italian artist Anna Rispoli they will transform the building into a twinkling live being, constructing a monument to home life and the everyday. For 15 minutes the students will change their daily routine and will turn on the lights not because they have returned home, but rather – to create a signal to the outside world. The windows of the building and the young people living behind them will create patterns of light in rhythm to the music, expressing a message about what home means to them. At this moment the city will become the spectator, but the residents of the building – the illuminated centre of the performance.

At the centre of Italian artist Anna Rispoli’s visual work and performance is the relationship between public space and private territory. The artist works in the ZimmerFrei group, which explores the real and imagined environment by the use of various means of formal expression, in which the mental and the physical becomes a unified witness to human experience. The group has participated in the Venice Biennale, Manifesta07 and the Theater der Welt Festival.

The performance of building lights at Ķīpsala will only take place twice, on the evenings of the 21st of November. Don’t miss it!
